I thought the podcast was terrific and the amount of detail that was put into the room that Michael created is incredible. I’m not an audiophile (actually have crappy hearing) but it was great to listen to what & why and the enthusiasm he has towards his hobby.
Didn’t notice it mentioned on the podcast nor in the article but I was wondering if there’s an estimate of cost for what he did? I know a lot of his equipment was already existing, but the design and implementation of the room and expenses related to that would be an interesting discussion.
I also didn’t see mentioned how far back the main seat is. It’s an 80″ screen and I was wondering the distance back from it the seat is located.

David,
I don’t have a specific total as to cost because it was part of the entire construction of a new home. We never really line itemed it. Also there are issues such as us building a basement so that we had room for it etc.
As for the seating arrangement, that I have well documented. The plans from the acoustic engineers have all the measurements. The main screen is 80″ x 45″ and the very bottom is at a height of 3′ 4 3/8″. The chair is set so that your head in the upright seating position will be centered at 10′ 8′ back from the front wall.

Hi - A couple of things you said in this show, as well as a recurring theme prompted me to write. I subscribed because your show name is The Gadget Show, yet you don’t often discuss gadgets. Further to that, you indicated today that you weren’t that aware of the Treo 650 being in Australia, and that flabbergasted me. The Treo is quite common in Australia and should be considered in the top two choices for those wanting a Phone/PDA combination. In my book it wins outright due to reliability, stability and ease of use. Unfortunately, it seems that marketing forces are only letting the Australian public know about Microsoft-based products, which are anything but stable and user-friendly. The amount of issues staff in my large corporation have with these things is ridiculous, yet we still continue standardise them.
The other comment you made was about not knowing what gadgets are out. Hmmmm, you might want to think about how that sounds given the show’s name. Otherwise, run a most excellent show.
On a more positive side, the show was interesting for me as I have recently built a cinema, and whilst it’s not in the league of Michael’s, it’s pretty damn awesome. My sound is superb, but I need to upgrade the DLP when I can afford it. It was good to hear Michael’s choices for demos were similar to mine (I wouldn’t actually watch Master & Commander, but it’s great for sound demos), but I would add Finding Nemo as the absolute best all-round cinema demo around. Awesome for colour and clarity demonstrations, and use the Whale scene as well as the “Hop into my mouth if you want to live” seagull/Pelican chase sequence for sound.
Thanks for reading.

Hi Stephen
Thanks for the feedback on the show. It’s good to know you like it even with your concern about the naming.
Unfortunately, recently I’ve been snowed. In-between my work at Sun and the book (which you may have heard me mention) I haven’t been the best at keeping up with gadget news. So my excuse is that’s it’s a short term issue. When the books done it’ll be back to following the gadget market.
As for the Treo situation, you’re right, I probably should know, but given the breadth of gadgets that are on the market it’s impossible to keep up with everything, so I must say I’m a gadget generalist. PDA phones actually bore the pants off me at the moment. The market has stagnated in my opinion, and we won’t see much change until the services come on board.
To be honest I’ve even thought of renaming the show, but I’ve got to convince the TPN guys about that :).
While I’ve got you. Can you tell me what you’d like to hear on the show. This includes the format, not just the content. I’m thinking of a revamp.
