The Gadget Show #32
The Gadget Show #032 (MP3 – 13.6MB – 39min 30sec)
I bring back Sean Berner from ZooVision to talk about the new iPod Video and television shows in iTunes. We talk about streaming video, the new market, and where things are headed.
I also mentioned Dean Gray Tuesday. Check out the site, and thanks to Tama Leaver for tipping me off about the project!
I also rant about the History of Podcasting, and the recent Wiki-Gate scandal (check Ewan’s rant for some details).
Given that I researched, for days, the history for the Whole Internet Guide to Podcasts And Internet Audio, I consider myself an authority. What’s I find most interesting is that in my text I explain that Kevin did indeed create an application called syncPod, many months before Adam wrote his script.
I wrote, “Eventually a few applications were developed to use the enclosure feature, like syncPod (that Kevin Marks demonstrated at BloggerCon in 2003) and Enclosure Extractor, but there still wasn’t one that was easy for anyone to use.”
Apparently, the other day, Curry removed these words from Wikipedia. “At the first Harvard BloggerCon conference, October 4-October 5, 2003, Kevin Marks demonstrated a script to download RSS enclosures to iTunes and synchronise them onto an iPod, something Adam Curry had been doing with Radio Userland and Applescript.”
In a more recent blog post, Adam had this to say, “I apologize to Kevin Marks for my history of removing this fact on WikiPedia. I really believed this was untrue”.
In August, before I submitted my chapter, I had Adam Curry proof read for accuracy (Dave Winer ignored any requests for his input). Adam replied “Looks great, reads well, is accurate.” So why does he claim that he thought the above statement was incorrect. This seems to suggest that he either ignored what I’d written, didn’t read it properly, or did know about Kevin because I bloody well wrote about it in the chapter he proofread.

Close; syncpod was the feed of music Adam made for me (and others) to test with. My script never had a formal name, as it wasn’t released, but I called it AudioSpooler. Check my blog for details.

[…] Lots of people have commented on the story. Cadenhead posted some more thoughts, Richard Giles writes that Curry is full of shit, as I read it, Audiobloogging 2.0 throws in the hat, over on Make You Go Hmm we get the Curry vs. Winer aspect of the story (head to Curry’s own site for more of the cat fight), Ewen Spence chimes in, as does The Blog Herald and Shelley Powers, who thinks an edit war is probably a good thing. I happen to agree. Mike Fylnn thinks it was inevitable and wonders why anyone gives a crap. Dave Winer wonders where all the historians have gone and a whole host of others that I’m leaving out. […]

Kevin: Thanks for clarifying. I’ll have to ammend that in the book.
