“We all know that you’re supposed to get in a good, long stretch before a workout, right? Unfortunately most of our commonly held beliefs regarding stretching are dead wrong, according to the New York Times—at least in the way you may be doing it.
Good news, in Australia, fitness instructors are generally informed not to do this… quick active stretch before a workout is good… nothing too long or too involved because the muscles are cold and it could lead to injury.
A couple of years ago there was a spout of injuries occuring with yoga in Melbourne due to stretching cold muscles too much too quickly.
A new diet said to result in fast, stress-free weight loss has taken Japan by storm.
The Morning Banana Diet is possibly the world’s easist diet to follow - except in Japan where its intense popularity has led to the nation’s worst-ever banana shortage.”
“Please help me raise money for the Breast Cancer Foundation. They do terrific work in all areas of research - and often have breakthroughs that are relevant to other cancers. Having lost Mum to Colon cancer in June, I would love to make some sort of contribution in her honour.”
“Step one is to start exercising. Step two is to keep doing it. Step three is to see and feel results. But even if you manage to stick with the first two steps, the third one can be a little hard to attain. You may not see results right away and, depending on how long it’s been since you exercised, you may feel worse instead of better–at least in the short term.”

“As astonishing as Usain Bolt’s record-breaking 100-meter sprint was, his time of 9.69 seconds is nowhere near what biostatisticians predict is the natural limit for the human body.

“Hi Beti,
I’ve just discovered the show and working my way through old eps.. Just wondering if you have done a show on Protein Shakes.. I’m curious as to if they are worthwhile?? I’m not looking for a meal replacement ‘Shake Diet’ - I like good healthy food too much! But are the protein shakes a good supplement to go along with exercise?
cheers
Nat

“It’s been 1 year and 5 months since I finished my Wii Sports Experiment (mirror), where I lost 9lbs., BMI went down two points, 3 inches off my waist, lower heart rate and more. You can see my before and after photos, video, charts, stats, and more, HERE. After that experiment I received international media attention (mirror) from the largest and most respected news agencies in the world.”
“Once home fitness was all about aerobics videos and then yoga DVDs; now it’s all about Wii — a new wave of computer games that require users to get off the couch and “play” sports. But is it really healthy?”
“In the time you spend each morning calibrating your hair gel, you could be doing something more important, with a much better payoff: eating breakfast. Mom was right (and it’s okay to admit it): Breakfast is the most important meal of the day.”
We interviewed Mickey a while back for the Nintento Wii Experiment, now his doing his experiment with the Wii Fit. Good Luck Mickey :)
“About a year ago, one morbidly obese (er, a tiny bit chubby) man began a quest to find out what happens when you stop being polite and try to exercise via Wii Sports (see above). Apparently after losing 9 pounds, dropping two points from his BMI, and 3-inches from his waist, he’s ready to go again, this time with the Wii Fit.”
“SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - For years, video games have been blamed for turning kids into idle layabouts who only venture off the couch to fill up on potato chips and soda.
Nintendo Co Ltd <7974.OS> now aims to shatter that image with a game that aims to get players off the couch and lead them to stretch, shake and sweat their way to a healthy life.”
“Fat-busting salad
What could be healthier or more low fat than salad? Well, it depends what’s in it and on it. In its basic state—a bed of salad leaves with chopped vegetables, it is indeed low fat and healthy. It’s what is added to our salads that gets us into trouble.
Salads prepared at restaurants or fast-food joints are not always the healthiest dishes on the menu. And those salad kits from the grocery store, with condiments and toppings included, offer convenience but may not necessarily be low fat. The salads listed below should raise some red flags.”

Vienna, my old co host, is living at the Gold Coast now and doing really well for herself, I am hoping one day in the near future she can co host the show again too. Thanks V for all the fun times we had creating the shows.
A big thanks goes out to all the guests I have had on the show. We have covered topics from Krav Maga to Kettle Bell Training with professionals in the fields.
Looking forward to many more years of podcasting on The Health and Fitness Show.
“Walking is easy. It’s so easy that no one ever has to teach you how to do it. It’s so easy, in fact, that we often pair it with other easy activities—talking, chewing gum—and suggest that if you can’t do both simultaneously, you’re some sort of insensate clod. So you probably think you’ve got this walking thing pretty much nailed. As you stroll around the city, worrying about the economy, or the environment, or your next month’s rent, you might assume that the one thing you don’t need to worry about is the way in which you’re strolling around the city.”
Yay!!! The Nike+ would be a great accessory with my iPhone!!!
“As the Second Coming of the JesusPhone looms over the horizon, the rumor pace starts to accelerate, with people digging in the dirt to try to get any clues about what’s awaiting in this incarnation of Apple’s cellphone. StuffTV is now reporting that—just like Jason wanted—Nike+ will definitely come to the iPhone in a big way, while code detectives have found strings that hint at support of Bluetooth stereo headphones, GPS support, and other iPhone seeeeeecrets:”
“The Nike+ fitness technology will indeed become available for the iPhone and the iPod touch, a Nike spokesperson has confirmed. Speculation began that it might when patent filings surfaced last month, pointing to an integrated fitness system similar to the existing Nike+iPod kit for Nanos. Although there is no sign of the extra sensors mentioned in the patent, or its extra activities such as weight-lifting, the new Nike+ system should at least replicate the running support of Nike+iPod, and its corresponding website tracking and competition.”
“In the last week alone, Nintendo rolled out the Wii Fit, a new game for its popular gaming console dedicated purely to lounge-room fitness, and Samsung introduced the miCoach mobile handset in partnership with adidas.
“Leveraging a partnership that began two years ago, Apple and Nike said Tuesday they hope to again redefine the way people work out by bringing the Nike + iPod experience to gyms around the world beginning this summer.”
Snorkeling is a great activity that is both economical and fun. It is great snorkeling with friends too.
“Snorkeling is a wonderful activity that can be enjoyed by almost anyone who has access to the ocean, a lake, river, pond or quarry. Snorkeling as an activity frequently lives in the shadows of scuba diving - another excellent pastime, but one that requires significantly more instruction, time and money. Most people who have snorkeled have done so only on group charters while on vacation, but snorkeling is an activity that can be done almost anytime, anywhere.” http://www.snorkeling.info/
I went indoor rock climbing the other day (with jwrigley and nic), wow, what a workout! I hadn’t been climbing for a while, so I really did miss how intense the workout was.
It was great to see parents taking their kids there. Climbing teaches them confidence, inner strength and great for self esteem.
I climbed at http://www.hardrock.com.au/ in the CBD. Really well designed place.
What I like about rock climbing is that it engages all muscles and helps you work them out using full range of motion. It is very challenging.
So you want to try Rock Climbing? What to expect and require:
You will be inducted before your first attempt… this is a really important step. The instructor will go through the belaying process and safety procedures. Many places have inductors onsite, so you don’t have to book, but I would call ahead just to be sure.
You will need a climbing partner. It is good to have one person that you can completely rely on to be your climbing partner.
Where to aquire all the equipment required:
I strongly recommend not to buy the harness, carabeena, chalk bag, etc until you have tried climbing at least twice and have really enjoyed it. These are not cheap items but if you plan to go climbing often, it is better that you purchase.
I keep a “climbing bag”, which has all my equipment ready to go for climbing… makes life really simple and you never have to worry about forgetting anything… just add water (a bottle of water, that is :)). I also have a swimming bag, snorkeling bag, and gym bag - easy to get ready, don’t have to worry about a checklist.
Can climbing be done instead of training at the gym?
It is funny but the climbing centres are usually referred to as gyms :) Climbing is the equivalent of an awesome resistance workout, with a little cardio. So you will still need a bit of extra cardio in your training regime and if you add stretching at the end of a climb you are completely covered!
Pampering pedicures are wonderful and relaxing, but be sure your beautician has good cleaning procedures. Always ask what cleaning procedures are used for foot spas and if in doubt, go elsewhere or do the pedicure yourself.
